Ventura College Spring 2012 Cardboard Chair Project

Have you ever seen chairs made out of cardboard? My sculpture students did a fabulous job of making one-of-a-kind, unique cardboard chairs. They were instructed to only use cardboard, any type of adhesive, and paint (optional). This year the range of designs covered a stool all the way to the electric chair! One chair had a cup holder for convenience. Others were created with a specific functional purpose in mind. Others incorporated mathematics into the design. See for yourself.

The Spring 2012 Beginning Sculpture Class is having a great start. Students are assigned to use wire, paper mache, plaster cloth, paint and other mixed media to create a representational self-portrait. What wonderful result! Student portraits were influenced by film makers, comic heroes, chefs and artists. Some students portrayed their self portrait through an abstract or dream like expression. In the end, the outcome is dynamic and thought provoking.

Ventura College Beginning Sculpture Final Projects

One of the projects in my syllabus is a group collaborative installation representing a current issue that is happening around us. Michael Mchale and Megan Petree were interested in addressing how the California budget cuts has an effect on our school. Classes on the campus were being cut or were threatened to be cut. The installation addressed this by using a clear plastic packing tape to create multiples sculptures which were then installed around our campus.

Another group of students Kaitlyn Perez, Elwood Harvey, Rudy Monzon, Daniel Chavez used the same materials but had a different approached.

I happened to walk by Mrs. McKillop's figure drawing class last semester. I was delighted to learn that she uses clay figures for students to do quick sketches. It was wonderful to see clay being used in this manner... as a means to an end as opposed to simply "the end."

Underglaze has never really been a passion of mine in the classroom - students tend to confuse underglaze with acrylic or oil paint. Instead of using it as a highlight or accent of the design, students tend to use it as a final decorative element for their work. The outcome usually looks very unappealing. "Addiction in Art" enjoyed a well-attended, one night showing in the Oxnard Art Beat Gallery in Oxnard, CA. Curated by Ventura College 3D instructor and artist Jenchi Wu, this show was a collaboration between Ventura College art instructors and their students. As artists and educators, the passion, drive, belief and dedication for creating works of art influences our daily teaching. Students absorb information from their instructors and reflect it on to their own work. This creates a thread between student and instructor. This exhibition showcased instructors Julie Dahl-Nicolle, Michelle Onstot, Catherine Day, Pam Huth, Bob Moskowitz, and their students' works. The exhibition included drawings, portraits, paintings, prints, ceramics, and sculpture.

Special thanks to Megan Petree for providing her beautiful voice and guitar playing to the evening, and Mitchel Wu Photography for capturing images from the event.

The students' first assignment: create a self-portrait. But not just your regular self-portrait. Students were asked to create a self portrait (at least 14" tall) using a historical vase as inspiration and reference. The assignment utilized various clay skills while requiring the students to think conceptually. Everyone is familiar with the traditional painted or photographic self-portrait... but a self-portrait vase? They did a GREAT job.

This is our second glaze firing of the Fall semester. Students helped load and unload the kiln, a science and art unto itself. Opening a kiln is like waking up on Christmas morning... did Santa leave us something amazing or a sack of coal!? Thankfully it was something amazing. Congrats to my students for a job well done!

I was invited to participate in the Ventura College International Students Club Meeting last Friday. Student members are from Brazil and the Philippines. We had a nice cultural exchange where we learned about each others homes and traditions. For my part I taught them how to make origami. As you can see from the photos they did well! I encourage students and staff to become involved with some of the VC clubs. If you have an interest or curiosity in something chances are there is a club for you. If not then find people with like-interests and look into forming your own club. It's just one more way to make the most of your time at VC.

9/14/11 - The students' first project in beginning sculpture was to create a sculpture that reflected themselves either in spirit, likeness or symbol. Students were mainly limited to using various wires and chicken wire to create the 3 dimensional work. They did an good excellent job of fulfilling the project requirements in a very creative manner.

Fall 2011 - 9/11 Remembrance Installation from Ventura College to Valencia's Helmers Elementary

This year marks the 10th anniversary of 9/11. We began the Fall 2011 semester with the installation event "Remember 9/11" which took place simultaneously on both the Ventura College campus as well as at Charles Helmers Elementary School (I am an art docent there) located in Valencia CA. Helmers' students began their installation on Friday 9/9/11. Ventura College began its installation on 9/6/11.

It's interesting to note that most of the Helmers students were either born in 2001 or not even born yet - so remembrances such as this are very important.

"9/11 was a horrific event. Too many innocent people lost their lives. I hope to god that nothing like that ever happens again."

"I remember being in 3rd grade & not understanding why my mother was crying or what was happening. 9/11 will never be forgotten and the peoples live that were taken will never be forgotten...."

9//9/11 Mrs. Wolf who teaches English 1A had her students to write about this installation. She encouraged students to not only read the messages on the tags but to also be aware of their surroundings using the five senses.

Three classes of 4th and 5th grade students participated in this 9/11 event.

Students used red frabic to weave "Remember 9/11" in a chain link fence.

And used blue tape to create words.

Summer Institute for Teaching Excellence

The first annual SITE workshop that was held at Ventura College beginning summer 2011 was a big success. The workshop provided various educational lectures. One of the workshops was the Experiential Learning Workshop. The lecture/studio class was hosted by Gigi Fiumerodo (Anthropology), Jaclyn Walker (English), and Jenchi Wu (Ceramics). This one and a half hour workshop included a brief history of cave paintings as well as early development of music with Gigi, creative writing one's thought process while developing and making the rattle with Jacyln and finally the hands-on experience of making a clay rattle with Jenchi. It was a wonderful and exciting interdisciplinary workshop. I was able to fire all the rattles and present them to each participant at the end of the workshop. Thank you to my colleagues who support the SITE program - Gwen, Judy, and Sharon. Thanks as well as Gigi and Jacyln for taking a leap of faith for the clay rattle collaboration. And finally thanks to all the student volunteers and many other hardworking staff who made this happen. I hope to see you all soon.

Spring 2011 Sculpture Installation - Collaborative Projects

This project required that students work together in groups of four to create a site-specific installation that deals with the space, the environment and the location around the Ventura College campus. Topic suggestions were open to students interpretation. Here are the students work for Spring 2011.

Artists: Austin Enoch, Katya Castro - "Web Of Lies"
Did you ever tell a lie? If you have, you should come by and unload your lies on the web that Austin and Katya had created. The web is located at Eastern Region of Campus walk way that channels to Art Building. This web has enjoyed an overwhelming response. Congratulations to both of you. Here are some of lies the viewers shared.

Artist: Robert Whiteside
Robert's installation wants to create an awareness and remembrance for all victims that died during war, natural disaster, or murder. The artist created the black image cut out so the viewer can stand behind the sculpture and become a part of it.

The title "Progress" reflects how nature fights for survival with humans. The markings on the tree hints at it being prepared for removal. The red lines symbolizes bleeding and protests over construction, housing, and diminishing green spaces. Students picked the largest tree on the campus to install their concept. During the installation, students encountered anger, confusion, and concern from pedestrians passing by.

In this installation, students address the overuse of pesticides. The insect depicted has mutated and in response the pesticide has to become even larger and stronger. The oversize bug and spray effectively creates a phycological space between the object and viewers.

This group of students created the pyramid with graphics that show children holding up the world. This symbolizes the that children of all races and genders are the foundation of our future.

Project 643 Gallery Space - Million Pieces and Million Dreams

Some photos from Friday night's opening at the 643 Project Space Gallery in Ventura. It is an interactive installation that invites viewers to write their wishes and hopes on a ceramic bowl, turn to a video camera and state their wish, and then heave the bowl at a painted Chinese symbol on the wall, shattering the bowl into a million pieces and thereby gaining a million wishes. The saying came from the artist's Grandfather who used to own a shop in Taiwan that sold ceramic bowls. If the artist accidentally broke a bowl her Grandpa would smile and lovingly tell her "million pieces and million wishes." 100+ bowls were thrown during the opening, which comes to 100 million wishes.

Here are a few photos of the prep we did for my installation at the Atkinson Gallery. Thanks to everyone who helped - Dane, Chris, Alan, Jeff, Mari, Trevor and Mitch. It was a huge undertaking and a true team effort to accomplish all that we did today.

The opening reception for the show is Friday Feb 25 from 5-7pm at the Atkinson Gallery on the Santa Barbara City College Campus. 721 Cliff Dr, Santa Barbara 93109. Stop by if you can - it's going to be an amazing installation.

It took 6 people plus a hand-operated fork lift to lift this 300+ pound sculpture into position. It consists of a solid ceramic cube that rests atop a tree trunk.

This exhibition, PROOFPRUEBA, looks at the complexities of the seemingly simple lives of contemporary Cubans as they stand in the shadow of their extraordinary past.

The photographs presented in this exhibition are blended together with the verses of Cuban writer Orlando Hernandez. Together they articulate the realities and sur-realities of Castro's Island Nation, while deepening our sense of the pains and pleasures that are the true texture of current Cuban existence.

Ventura College Beginning Sculpture Exhibition - Cardboard Chairs

The Beginning Sculpture class enjoyed a wonderful exhibition in the quad on Monday, Nov. 8. On display were their chairs constructed from cardboard. Faculty and student body alike stopped by to check it out. They were invited to speak with the students about their work as well as test the structural integrity of the sculptures by sitting on them. It was a wonderful first exhibition experience for the students.

This Beginning Sculpture class project was to construct chairs with some sort of historical reference/influence out of cardboard. The chair would need to support the artist's weight when completed. Great results on a challenging assignment.

Ventura College One Book One Campus Art Exhibit

Following are several photos from the One Book One Campus opening night reception held on the Ventura College campus October 7, 2010. The installation, "Baked Potatoes," was a collaborative project produced by the VC ceramic students. The book and show addresses how a mono-culture affects our daily life. The students symbolized this by creating an installation of the ubiquitous potato - how the same strain of potato can be found in foods across the world.

9/11 Remembrance Installation

The 9/11 Remembrance was an outdoor installation on the Ventura College campus. This public installation was designed to bring the Ventura College student body together - to create a shared experience between the various disciplines of study. Participants were asked to write their thoughts on clay tiles provided by the 3D department. The tiles were then hung from trees. Shared thoughts - some sorrowful, some patriotic, others angry - were on view for anyone who cared to stop and read. The installation was a team effort between Ventura College 3D and the ASVC and was timed to coincide with a similar event being held at Oxnard College.

Several of my students joined me at Ventura gallery 643 Project Space last Friday. Gallery owner Matt Furmanski kindly stepped in to give us some insight into artist David Kiddie's wonderful work. It was a fun and informative visit.

Hunter is repeatedly drawn to site-specific installation work. "I like to approach a space not knowing what I'm going to make or what materials I'll use. One strategy I explore is to look for something in the environment that is mundane or overlooked and find ways to frame it, or point to it. In this way the ordinary can be exposed as extraordinary."

After an amazing summer I'm ready to start my new job as a full-time faculty member at Ventura College. I teach four classes this semester - two multi-levels ceramic classes, one glaze calculation class, and one sculpture class. I created this blog to allow my students to see each others' work process, share their ideas, give comments and post announcements for projects, field trips and gallery shows.
